A Times Colonits Article from November 2023 shows the beginnings of tenant assistance policies starting to be enacted in some of the municipalities in Victoria.

The policies generally give tenants some options when buildings get redeveloped or rezoned. For example, in Esquimalt, tenants now “have the right of first refusal to move into the replacement rental units and to pay rent 20 per cent below the market rate”.

As of the writing of the article, the municipalities that have some policy like that include: Victoria proper, Sidney, Saanich, View Royal, and Esquimalt.

Kate Alys of the Victoria Tenants Union was also quoted in the article, mentioning how some of the stipulations leave many tenants unable to benefit from these policies.
